What is Experience and How Can One Gain the Right Experience?
The
word experience can sometimes be very confusing. If you ask a person who is
just out of his college after getting a degree – ‘What is your experience?’
He
will probably say – ‘I am a fresher. I
don’t have any experience.’
The
question is – Is he right in his saying?
To
get the right answer, one needs to understand the real meaning of the word
‘experience.’ If you google, you will get many different meanings of the word ‘experience.’
I
have come up with my own understanding of the word ‘experience.’
Here
is what I have understood – Experience is
what you do regularly in your minutes.
Let’s
take an example. Say, a student is studying in a college. In the three years of
his college life, he has always been late.
What
has he been doing on a regular basis?
Coming late!
So,
we can say that he has three years of experience of ‘coming late to class.’
Similarly,
if a student is always before time for his classes and submits all his
assignments on time, then he has a full three years experience of right time
management.
On
the lighter side, if after work, you have been watching television on a daily
basis for the last five years, then you have five years experience of sitting
and watching the television. And you will find yourself doing it quite
effectively.
Every
day, we all get new twenty four hours and every day we do many things, most of
which are out of our habits. This is what becomes what we know as experience.
So,
everybody who has lived for a considerable amount of time on this planet has
some kind of experience.
Now,
having understood the meaning of experience, ask yourself –
1.
What is my current experience?2.
What kind of experience do I want to
develop?
Do
I want to be a great public speaker?
Or,
do I want to be good as a team leader?
Start
doing things in your minutes that will make you a great public speaker or a
team leader over a considerable period of time.
Knowing
that you want to be a great public speaker and not developing the courage to
stand up and speak in a class or any other public gathering will not give you
the experience of becoming a public speaker. Instead, you will develop the negative
experience of being shy in front of the audience. Every time, you will tend to behave
according to your experience. You will only do what you have experienced in the
past.
Knowing
alone is not enough to gain experience. Doing the right action will help you
gain the right experience.
So,
are you ready to gain a new and a right kind of experience?
Yes?
Then,
identify what is it that you want to be good at, and then start taking the
necessary actions on a regular basis with passion that will make you an experienced
individual in that particular skill.
