7 Leadership Skills for the New Era

For those of you who have achieved something in life and want to move towards the pinnacle of your success, please read on to get inspired.

1. SHOW AND TELL

Never boast about what you can do, instead, learn to first show the positive results that you have achieved and then talk about it. This will build trust in you, and people will start having confidence in your capabilities. Henceforth they will start believing what you say you will do in the future.

On another hand, if you just tell with no concrete proof, people will expose your bluff and will not stand for you.

2.  DO THE RIGHT THING EVEN IF IT CREATES PAIN FOR
 THE SHORT TERM

A leader knows that any form of change is painful, and yet change is inevitable. He will put his followers in short-term pain in order to provide them with long-term advantages and a better society to prosper in.

A leader knows he can never make everybody happy at the same time. There will be many people who will feel uncomfortable with the change and stand against him. Then there will be an even larger number of people who will understand the bigger picture and will support him even though they have to go through some painful experiences.

A leader, therefore, needs to justify his actions with proper data and prove that it's for the greater good, the changes he plans to introduce. He must be able to sell the brighter picture to his followers because of the change that he envisions.

Hardcore actionable should follow to make the brighter picture reality. The whole thing should not become just a castle in the air.

3.  USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO SHOWCASE YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Today is the world of marketing and PR. One needs to do his own marketing and PR because nobody else cares.

As a leader, know how to use the power of social media to establish your persona and promote your achievements.

But beware!

Never bluff on social media. Think before you make a statement. You never know how people will react to it. Practice restraint if you are not sure of things.

Don’t make generalized statements on social media. People can rip your statement apart.

4.  CRITICIZE OTHERS ONLY IF YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELF AS BETTER THAN OTHERS

You can never become big by belittling or downgrading others. Criticizing others will not make you better than them. People can see through your criticism. They realize that a person who people criticize even after doing what is right, that man is a man of action. The person who is criticizing is a man of no values. He only knows one thing—Criticize others!

Go ahead, work hard, and put some outstanding achievements behind you. It takes years to create something worthwhile that society can look up to. There is no shortcut.

Never criticize others just for the sake of criticizing. But if your critics hit you, hit back with twice the force. Use your achievements to call off their bluffs. Remember, people who criticize seldom do any worthwhile work. They just drag their days and life.

5.  DON’T FOCUS ON CRITICS AND CRITICISM IF

YOU ARE DOING THE RIGHT THING

If you focus on critics and criticism, you can do nothing in life. The job of some people is only to criticize. The only thing that is loudest is their mouth.

If you know you are doing the right thing, just focus on that one thing.

You know that on the way you will commit mistakes and people will criticize you for your mistakes, they will advise you you should not have done that.

Don’t worry.

There are people sitting in the drawing-room watching cricket on TV, criticizing and advising stalwarts like M.S. Dhoni and Virat Kohli on how to play cricket?

Don’t change your goal. Instead, change your strategies and tactics to achieve that goal. Once you achieve your goals, the same critics will come forward and appreciate you. Even if they don’t, who cares? There are lots of people benefitting from your creation. Be happy for them.

6.  SHOW THAT YOU ARE FIT AND READY FOR ACTION

A leader needs to take good care of his physical health. The way you walk and the way you use your physical self to communicate can have an impressive effect on your followers. Even though it may not be in your hands, you need to ensure that you don’t take a leave because you are not feeling well.

If you are a leader or want to be a leader, you need to understand that people are watching you. They are observing you keenly. Even a minor act of yours can impress them or destroy your reputation.

If you want to be a leader, make sure you are active and raring to go showing no signs of tiredness or physical weakness.

7.  KEEP NATION/ORGANIZATION FIRST

Look at the bigger picture. Don’t just focus on a small group or community. If the organization develops, then every person in that organization is going to benefit. If you focus on just a small group, you will sow the seeds of hatred in other people’s minds. Favoritism never works if you want to be a leader.

Rise above individualism. Make the organization strong and people will realign with it when they realize how it is going to benefit them in the long run.

For example, when you take your child to the hospital for an injection, it is a painful experience for the child. The child might scream and shout at the top of his voice. He will not be ready to even leave the house. Yet you take him; because deep down you know that giving that injection to your child will make him safe from many deadly diseases for life. In the future, your child will be thankful to you for taking good care of him.

As the saying goes—No Pain, No Gain.

In Conclusion
