Self Introduction or the story of your life is one of the key elements of your Job Interview.

Why does the interviewer want to know the story of my life? - You may ask.

Well, he doesn’t want to know all the secrets from your life. What he is really interested in are certain points that will help him come to a conclusion whether you are the right candidate for the job or not.

Few questions that he may be interested in is:

1. Why did you chose to study a certain subject?

2. What Hard and Soft Skills do you possess?

3. What are your plans for your career?

4. Are you capable of solving real-life problems using your education and skills?

… and the list can go on.

How to Write an Introduction About Yourself for a Job Interview?

Now, before you get started on writing your self-introduction it is important to understand the occasion for which you are writing your introduction. And the occasion is a Job Interview. So, your introduction has to be professional rather than personal. Here you should not include matters that you would share with your friends or family.

What Should You Say in Your Professional Self Introduction?

Here I am going to share with you in 9 points what you should cover in your self-introduction. These 9 points are written in a certain sequence, but feel free to play with the sequence and come up with your own. There is no hard and fast rule as long as you are able to convey to the interviewer through your self-introduction that why you are the best-suited candidate for the job.

Tips to Introduce Myself in Interview

1. Start with your full name and then go on to mention where you come from? Maybe you can talk about what the place is known for.

2. Talk about what inspired you to choose the subject of your studies. Go beyond saying, ‘I like this subject that is why I chose to do my higher studies in this subject.’ Tell a story behind it. What or who inspired you to pursue this subject?

3. Talk about the projects that you handled during your academic years. Was it a group project or an individual project? If it was a group project, what was your role in it? How did you contribute to the group project?

If you are a fresher, the projects done by you can become your experience. Get excited about your project. Let the interviewer know what problems you solved in that project? What was the scope of the project, what procedure or technology you used to create the project, and finally what was the outcome?

4. If you had the opportunity to do an internship in an organization, tell the highlights of your internship. What job did you do as an intern? What practical skills did you learn there? You can talk about learning problem-solving skills, work ethics, time management, communication skills, learning to take responsibility, and being a team player.

Even if you have spent only three months in your internship, if you had offered to take up more responsibility and did your job sincerely, your three months could have given you about six months or even one year of work experience.

It is not always about the number of days you spend in a company, it is about how many tasks you get done in a day and how effectively you do it helps you gain experience.

5. Talk about the professional accomplishments that you can relate to the job profile that you are applying for. Mention the accomplishment that was the most memorable and even challenging. How did you overcome those challenges? Tell an inspirational story about yourself.

Mention how each accomplishment helped you shape your personality. Share how the skills that you learned will help you to solve future problems in your job.

6. One important aspect that you should reflect upon in your self-introduction is - What inspired you to apply for this job?

What were your one or two compelling reasons for you to apply for this job? Don’t ever say that there was a job vacancy so I applied. Was it the job opportunity the company was offering that match your skills and your career objective? Or Was it the brand name of the company that attracted you to apply for the job? Or was it the job profile?

If you can give a compelling reason for applying for this job, the chances are the interviewer may be inspired to offer you the job.

7. As you come towards the end of your self-introduction, talk about the inner strength that you possess. Your inner strengths can be being - self-motivated, optimistic, focused, punctual, dedicated, team player, a leader, quick learner.

Link your inner strengths to your career plan. Think about how your inner strengths can help you advance your career. For example, you can say something on the lines that - ‘My ability to learn quickly helps me to pick up concepts fast and help solve problems.’

8. Finally, you may talk about what you do in your leisure time or free time. Leisure time is a time when we are not working on our job. In these times we have the choice of doing whatever we feel like doing.

Most people spend their time watching Television or surfing social media sites or playing video games. While some indulge in developing a new skill, learning something new, reading, interacting with friends and families.

What do you do?

The best way to utilize your leisure time is to create a balance between what you like doing and what more you need to do to enhance your life and career.

We human beings love to get entertained. It’s okay to some extent to watch television or YouTube videos or anything else you love to indulge in as long as you are also working on your self-development.

More than talking about your hobbies like listening to songs, cooking, or traveling, you can mention that you use your leisure time to get connected with other professionals on LinkedIn or you attend seminars, webinars related to your field, or you take up a professional certificate course that will help you get a better opportunity.

9. The closing line of your self-introduction should convey to the interviewer that you take pride in whatever you are doing.

This is very important for the progress and development of your career. It will send a message to the interviewer that you are committed to your goals and will be an asset to the organization.

How to Write Myself for Interview?

Now it is time to get to work. For most of the candidates, this is the most difficult task. But if you learn to enjoy it, this will become the most exciting part. You will be introduced to your true self.

So, what do you have to do? You have to write down the actual sentences based on the points discussed above.

You can start with a question: ‘How do I want to portray myself in front of the interviewer?’

Based on your answer to the above question and the nine points that we have discussed, you can start writing your self-introduction.

 FAQs on Self - Introduction

Q1. How can I introduce myself as a fresher?

Be aware that your introduction should have a professional touch. Start with your full name, next state your academic qualification, tell why you chose to study that subject, next state your professional qualifications, then talk about 1-2 projects or assignments that you did in your college and how it will help you in building your career, finally, close your self-introduction by saying that you take pride in what you do.

Q2. How can I introduce myself in one word?

Even though you are using one word to introduce yourself, please say it in full sentence. To answer the question, ask yourself - What behaviour do I show the most in a professional setup?
