Why Do Companies Hire?

Career Tips for College Students | Young Professionals

After we complete our education the next but obvious step for most of us is to apply for a job and get into the mainstream of the economy.

But as a candidate, before we apply for any job if we could take a moment and sit back and ponder on this one question - ‘Why do Organizations hire?’ then I am sure we will have great clarity and we could become more valuable in the marketplace and in our job.

In this blog, I am going to share why organizations hire and do they have a choice of not hiring any candidate?

Why Do Organizations Hire?

The answer to this question may sound very obvious and straightforward but it will pay many folds in the long run if we could dive a little bit deep into the answer to this question.

An organization hires people to take care of or handle certain pressing needs at various levels in the company. They look at certain skill sets, attitudes, and capabilities that help them decide whether the candidate who has applied for the post is the right fit for the organization or not.

Do the Organizations Have a Choice on Hand not to Hire?

The answer to this question is of course yes! They always have the option of not hiring anyone for a particular post.

It is not that they don’t want to hire or save money by not hiring. It can be just that they do not find the right candidate for the post. Just because an organization is sitting to hire doesn’t mean that it will hire anybody and everybody who looks like a human being and walks into the interview room on his two legs.

What most first-time job seekers fail to appreciate is that one miss-hiring in an organization doesn’t just cost a company one or two months' salary of the miss-hired employee. The cost is way too high.

Well, that is a topic of a new blog.

The HR Managers and the recruiters representing their organization during a recruitment drive make the potential candidate go through a process of recruitment before they shortlist and pick up a candidate that they believe will serve the purpose of the organization.

In fact, they are determined to find the right candidate with the right skills, right expertise, and experience to help them with their organizational needs for the long term.

Once they find the candidate and come to a conclusion they send out an offer letter for the candidate to accept or reject the offer.

Once the candidate is onboard the organization expects the employee to wear various hats as he goes about doing his job.

In addition to what the candidate has been hired to do the company gives him additional responsibilities that may or may not be directly related to the position. In every organization, this is the package deal. The job profile of an individual is bundled with other sometimes ordinary tasks.

Some of the responsibilities that the company expects an employee to fulfill are:

1. General or Common Responsibilities:

These responsibilities can include reporting on or before time for work, follow the rules and regulations of the organization, doing some paperwork related to the job at hand. Sometimes maybe even staying back to get today’s work done. It can have many aspects depending on organization to organization.

2. Focused Assignments or Projects:

This is where the core profile of the employee comes into play. He will be called upon to carry out the duty for which he has been hired. It is based on the capabilities that he has developed and the expertise that he has gained or has done extensive study in that particular field. In short, he will be working on his core competencies.

Every organization worth its salt provides a playground, a playing field for their employees to explore their talent and come out a winner. It is up to the individual employee how he makes use of the playground and what kind of games he loves to play in his job.

In fact, an employee gets many opportunities to excel in his field of work. It doesn’t mean that life in the company is going to be a cakewalk or a smooth sail. For those who are new to a job, opportunities come in the form of trouble and problems. If you stand up and face the problem you will convert it into an opportunity or else it will just be that - One Big Problem or an Issue!

Whenever someone makes a decision they want that decision to be an accurate decision. Whether it is an individual or an organization they want their decision to be right.

Every organization in the long run wants to feel confident that they have made the right choice in selecting a particular candidate for the job at their organization. It is up to the individual employee to provide this assurance and confidence to the management. This can be done by showing utmost sincerity, earnestness, and dedication towards their job.

An Organization Has Many Written and Unwritten Rules that they play by as the employees of the organization go about doing their daily tasks.

In addition to the written rules in an organization for its employees, there are many unwritten rules too. The management may not directly address these rules or behavior but they sure do expect each and every employee to adhere to these unwritten rules.

One of the Unwritten Rules of an Organization is:

‘Do what needs to be done in your job without waiting for your senior management to provide you with the necessary permission.’

Most of the time I have seen many new employees, sometimes even the veteran ones not taking any action just because it doesn’t concern them or just because their immediate boss has not told them to do anything. They just remain silent spectators always waiting to push the blame onto someone else for the mistake.

“If in the given scenario it is the RIGHT THING to do and it is in your control to do and help things better at your job, then you should very well go ahead and just do it!”

Sometimes it sounds very tragic. A new employee joins a company with the laid-back behavior and attitude of a college student. He has got into the habit of professors pushing him to complete his assignments, to come and sit for the test and clear the exams. It’s as though the burden lies on the professors rather than on the students to excel academically. At work also their behavior is ditto. Just sit there doing nothing and when the boss enters the office just start shuffling few papers here and there or start hitting the keyboard to show that they are busy working.

In Conclusion

Human beings are hired not just to do a job. If it was just doing a job the organizations could have bought a machine. Instead, they have hired a human being. The reason for this is that each organization wants its human force to use its intelligence and think. They have hired you as an individual based on your skills and they want you to use your judgment to take actions in the best possible way for the betterment of the department you work for and for the organization as a whole.

Keep this philosophy of success in mind as you daily walk into your organization door to spend the golden years of your living building your career.

Make this a guiding principle as you move upwards to reach the pinnacle of your success.
