Model Essay in English: Ships don’t sink because of the water around them; ships sink because of the water that gets in them

MODEL ESSAY FOR COMPETITIVE EXAMS [1000 words]:

Topic:

Ships don’t sink because of the water around them; ships sink because of the water that gets in them.

A ship sailing out into the ocean is surrounded by water that is spread across miles and miles yet it doesn’t sink the ship for one and only reason -- the water is on the outside. It has not found its way to enter the ship.

The ‘unsinkable’ ship Titanic sank not because it was surrounded by water on the outside. It sank because the water outside flooded the compartments of the Titanic, taking it down.

The water entered the ship because something was not strong enough to face the iceberg that caused the ‘unsinkable’ ship to sink.

Cut back to the present times. The same principle applies to our lives too. Human beings are also no less than ships.

If we have a birds-eye view of the world, we will find that each individual is surrounded by an ocean of contents floating around us, instigating us to consume them through various means.

The newspapers are filled with negativity, the news channels broadcast debates where people are shouting at the peak of their voice trying to prove something they themselves don’t believe in. We sit and watch these programs for hours and hours. They go down to the lowest level of their behavior pulling us down mentally and emotionally along with them.

Slowly we start enjoying such kinds of programs. Throughout the course of our lives, we expose ourselves to these platforms that make our lives unpleasant and filled with hatred. We become carriers of this negativeness, spreading it across society.

Navigating through this ocean of content day in and day out a day comes when we hit an iceberg of negativity. It takes over our minds and thoughts. We get swayed by its intensity and start playing in the hands of the people who propagated such content.

Slowly and steadily we start losing interest in things, surrendering to the negativity. And then one fine day we get up to find that we have reached the bottom of the pit of darkness.

We may not be able to imagine what it is doing to our life as we allow all this negativity to enter our mind? What kind of person are we becoming?

Whom do we blame? The Social Media, or the people who throw out negative content on these platforms? Can we really blame them?

No, we cannot and as an individual, we should not because there is nothing in our hands to put a stop to such negativity. But someone has to take responsibility for the damage done. The buck stops at the individual.

Why did we get influenced by such rampant negativity? It was because somewhere deep down we were not strong enough to ward off such contents. The walls to safeguard our mental stability and health were not built by us resulting in us drowning in the tsunami of negativism.

Is there a way out?

Yes! We can avoid sinking in the ocean of negativeness by consciously not letting what’s happening around us to get inside us and weigh us down.

Lotus flower is a good analogy. Even though it grows in murky and dirtiest water, it blossoms into a beautiful flower. A flower that is a symbol of purity, enlightenment, and rebirth.

Even if we are surrounded by water of negativity and ‘thought dirt’ we have the choice to still remain pure.

The world out there has laid out in front of us a huge buffet. Just because there is a buffet laid out in front of us doesn’t mean that we have to eat everything.

Just as the Lotus plant takes what is necessary and rejects the rest, what we put on our plate and what we reject is completely our choice. This choice of ours will decide how healthy we become.

Still, many people out there believe that ‘Everything around us controls us.’ This is far, far away from the truth. While things around us have the ability to influence us, they cannot control us unless and until we give it the power to do so.

Just because you see something with your eyes doesn’t mean that you need to focus on it. You hear things on the television debates and read in newspapers doesn’t mean that you have the pressure to embrace it and accept it as your absolute truth.

We have to practice the power of choice to allow what comes inside us and what stays out.

While starting my career I was constantly in the company of people who were heavy smokers. They used to smoke one to two packs of cigarettes every day. But not even once did I feel the urge to take a puff of the cigarette. I did not allow what was happening around me to influence me to follow what people around me were doing.

Things happening around us doesn’t change us from inside unless and until it gets on the inside of us.

It is on the individual to resist the devil who is looking for ways to enter our minds and take over our thoughts.

How can one resist these negative forces? Focus on yourself. Focus on your goals, focus on what is important to you and align yourself by creating actionable that will lead you to your goals.

If you feel all alone and demotivated, read the right books, tune into the right channel, be in the company of positive and successful people. Refuse to take in anything negative, refuse to give in, instead replace it with powerful and motivating messages.

We need to be aggressive and attacking if we don’t want to be under the constant threat of being attacked. The willpower inside us to resist these devilish forces is much stronger than we realize. All it takes is the willingness to awaken them within us.

Remember - “Don’t let what’s happening around you get inside you and weigh you down.
