A Quick & Fun Way to Develop Awesome Vocabulary
by Investing 30 Minutes Every day and Speak Impressive English Staring Right
Now
Once
you learn to speak quite good English, you don’t want to stop at that. You desire
to take it a notch up and not only want to become impressive in your
conversation but also enhance your thinking capacity.
What
is it that will help you achieve your goal?
The
answer lies in having an impressive bank of words in the library of your mind
that you can pull out as and when required. But how do I develop such a
library? How can I remember these words so that I can recall them when I have
to use them?
That’s
what we are going to discuss in this blog.
This
blog is inspired by a piece of content taken from the book Super Memory – It can be yours written by Shakuntala Devi.
You
can Google the book later and buy it online to take advantage of the 12
practical lessons to boost your memory.
For
now, let’s dive right into it.
How To Increase Your Vocabulary in Super Easy Way
Learning
is accelerated if it takes the form of a fun activity. The fun here means doing
something that makes a task like developing vocabulary enjoyable. When we are
having fun it generates an emotion inside us. Under the influence of this
emotion whatever we do or learn sticks in our minds for a long time.
How
do we add fun to the activity of developing new and powerful vocabulary?
One
way to achieve this is to play ‘Buzzword Today’ suggested by the author in the
book.
It
involves five steps (plus one additional step that I have added) that are so
simple that you can start instantly as we discuss them.
So,
are you game?
Let’s
set the ball rolling!
STEP
#1: Choose a new word. Any word that
catches your fancy or that you would like to use in your daily conversation. If
you can pick a word that is related to your field of work or study it will help
you communicate better in the environment you operate in. For the sake of this
exercise let me choose the word – SQUANDER.
STEP
#2: Listen to the correct pronunciation of
the word. You can visit any search engine and type ‘how to pronounce’ followed by the word you have chosen.
For example, I will simply type – how to
pronounce squander
And
just click on search or press enter on the keyboard. Listen to it two to three
times and pronounce it yourself. Get comfortable with pronouncing the word
correctly.
STEP
#3: The next step involves finding out the
meaning of the word. Again, you can refer to a dictionary or seek the help of
Google Baba. If I search the meaning of the word ‘squander’ I get - waste (something,
especially money or time) recklessly and foolishly.
Another
meaning is to allow an opportunity to pass or to be lost.
Try
to visualize the meaning and phrase it in your own words. You may even
translate the meaning sentence into your language for a better understanding.
As you comprehend the meaning, try visualizing the situations under which this
meaning is applicable. In the case of the word squander, I can imagine
myself or someone else wasting their time or money in the past doing something
irrelevant or buying something that is now lying somewhere, god only knows
where in the house.
STEP
#4: Before you get into this step, I
highly recommend that you create a special notebook dedicated to you developing
your vocabulary. In that notebook write as many sentences as you can using the
word that you have chosen. Search for some example sentences online. Observe
how the sentences have been created to convey a message. Get creative and create
your sentences using different situations that you encounter daily.
For
example, I can create the following sentences using the word squander.
I
find your friend wasting time surfing social media. I can say:
‘Stop squandering your time on social media.’
I
have gone with my friend shopping. He is looking at buying something that may
not be of much use to him. I can say:
‘Hey! Don’t squander your money on useless items.’
I
find my younger brother wasting his time. I can say:
‘Instead of squandering your time here and there why
don’t you complete your assignment?’
I
hope you get the idea.
Once
you have written the sentences it’s time to go to the next step.
STEP
#5: Make this your buzzword for the day.
Now, before we go ahead it’s important to understand what is a buzzword? The buzzword
is a word or it can also be a phrase that becomes popular for some time.
So,
how do you make your chosen word a buzzword? By using it in your daily
conversation throughout the day. You are already armed with the sentences you
have created in the above step. Go ahead and use it. If you don’t get an
opportunity, create one. In addition, look out for situations where you can use
the word of the day.
How
is this method better than just byhearting the word meaning? The advantage here
is you are using the word in your daily conversation again and again. With
practice, you not only know the meaning of the chosen word but also know how to
effectively use it in your daily conversation in different situations.
STEP
#6: Make the above 5 steps a habit. Every day
before you start your day follow the above 5 steps. Even on Sundays and
holidays. If you want to have a single word as the buzzword for two days, that is
cool as long as you are using it in your daily conversation on both days. Decide
what works for you and follow it.
Hey!
As I am writing the blog another idea of a step jumps out of my mind. This is
awesome.
Here’s
what the idea is:
How
about creating a list of synonyms and antonyms of the word you have chosen?
Visit Google Baba again and find out at least
5 synonyms and 5 antonyms of your chosen word. Use them along with your daily
buzzword. You should not find it difficult as the words are related to each
other. Either they have the same meaning or are of opposite meaning.
Were
you struck with any brilliant ideas that could be incorporated as you were
reading the blog? Do let me know in the comment section so that we all can
benefit.
In
Conclusion
We
all can create fun in our daily routine by looking at it from a different
perspective. If you find the task of following what we have discussed boring
just flip it and change the way you look at it. Maybe you can have a theme for
each day. Today you can choose a funny word, tomorrow you can go with a word
that represents a different emotion. Keep on tweaking and keep the fun element
alive.
Even
if you learn ten words in a month using the above steps, by the end of a year
you would have developed a big collection of 120 words in all. If you become
ambitious and go for learning one word each day, including Sundays and holidays,
then by the end of a year you would have in your bank a whopping 365 words. If
it’s a leap year your word count will increase to be 366.
Are
you excited to get started?
The
Right Time is NOW!
Happy
Learning. Talk to you soon.
