How I Built My Confidence in English—And How You Can Too
“Sir, how do I become confident in English speaking?”
I get asked this question a lot. And every single time, I smile.
Because I’ve been exactly where my students are today.
I didn’t grow up in an English-speaking environment. There were no dinner table conversations in English. No elder sibling coaching me in grammar or pronunciation.
But somewhere during my school days, I made a choice—a quiet, determined decision.
I wanted to get better at speaking English.
Not to impress people.
Not to show off.
But to express myself.
So I threw my shyness and nervousness out the window. (Okay, not all at once, but enough to get started.)
And I made a crucial shift in my thinking—
❌ I stopped chasing “fluency.”
✅ I started chasing familiarity.
This one change made all the difference.
Fast forward to today…
I now train college students who are getting ready for job interviews.
I see them walk in—smartly dressed, resumes printed, smiles in place. But the moment they sit down for a mock Group Discussion or a JAM session…
They freeze.
Their hands sweat. Their lips tremble. And sometimes, their voice simply disappears.
They whisper to me later:
“Sir, I think I lack confidence…”
But here’s the truth:
It’s not a confidence issue.
It’s a comfort issue.
Their body and brain are not yet used to speaking English.
The discomfort shows up as fear. And that fear becomes self-doubt.
What they don’t realize is—they’re aiming too far ahead. Fluency will come. But only after comfort.
So I tell them:
“Don’t worry about speaking in front of a crowd. First, just get comfortable speaking English.”
That’s the first and most powerful step.
🔥 Here’s a simple practice that works wonders:
Speak just 5 lines of English—every day.
Not 5 minutes. That’s too vague.
But 5 lines—
✅ Concrete
✅ Achievable
✅ Confidence-boosting
You could start with lines like:
* “How are you?”
* “Let’s go for a cup of tea.”
* “It’s hot outside.”
* “I like your shoes.”
* “Can I help you with that?”
Or better, you can create your own lines.
Simple lines.
Daily effort.
Big results.
Make Your Tongue and Brain Best Friends
When you do this every day, something magical begins to happen.
Your tongue and brain start becoming friends with English.
You won’t have to “think in English.”
You’ll start speaking English naturally.
And that’s how confidence is built.
Not in one giant leap—but one sentence at a time.
Ready to get started?
Speak 5 lines today. Aloud.
Say them to your friends.
To your teacher/professor.
Or even to yourself in the mirror.
And if you want a fun challenge — drop one English sentence in the comments below. 👇
Let’s build your comfort zone, one line at a time.
